You may need to spend extra time there preparing for the battle against the gym leader... assuming, of course, that you plan to challenge him for a badge. There are a few perks that come with defeating him, but if you would rather not, I do not think anyone would force you.
It is difficult to say how long any one person will stay here. Some have been here for longer than a year, while others remain for only a few weeks. This place seems to enjoy inconsistency.
